Leaders in Cinema: Game of Thrones
A. The Supervisor
Supervisors' techniques during movies or TV shows are critical to the success of their production and overall sales. Notably, the techniques which a particular supervisor adopts differentiate them from others to a greater extent (Campbell & Pearson, 2019). Besides, the supervisors' leadership method is a greater determinant of a movie or TV series’ success. In this case, the mechanism the supervisors use to create a conducive and impactful environment depends on the nature of the leadership style. With a proper leadership style, the supervisor can organize all participants to achieve the set objectives. This paper shall examine the three supervisory techniques used in one of the TV shows. In this case, the paper shall focus on this examination based on the Game of Thrones TV show.
B. Three supervisory techniques
Game of Thrones has several directors who used different supervisory techniques during the series production. I noted that different supervisors used unique strategies after watching the entire TV show (Campbell & Pearson, 2019). However, this paper shall focus on one director in one of the Game of Thrones episodes. Specifically, the paper shall evaluate the supervisory techniques which Neil Marshall adopted in producing the “Blackwater.” Notably, black water is the ninth episode in the second season of Game of Thrones. In brief, this segment shall discuss the three supervisor technics based on this Blackwater episode. The supervisory techniques Neil Marshall used in the Blackwater episode include close-up shots, long shots, and Dutch angle shot techniques.
Close-up shot
One of the strategies which Neil Marshall used is close-up shots. A close-up shot is a camera shot aiming to capture the most vital component for the viewers. For instance, the camera may focus on crucial details, features, objects, or actors' faces (Campbell & Pearson, 2019). The major function of a close-up is to relay crucial information to the viewer by stressing a particular thing at a close range. In most cases, the supervisor uses close-up shots to connect the audience intimately with a particular scene. For instance, Neil Marshall used a close-up shot to intimately connect with the audience during the wildfire in Blackwater episode. In this case, the camera showed the soldiers' brutal faces and the arrows with fire closely as they shot arrows toward the enemy ships. After shooting the arrows, the camera showed clear facial expressions of enemies as they cried in pain due to the fire blast. In brief, the supervisor aimed to share the real emotional experience from the scenes with the viewers.
The supervisors’ adoption of close-up shots has resulted in a significant revolution in the film industry. Notably, the close-up shot has led to new performing and acting approach because slight facial movements and glances convey significant meaning to the audience (González Cid, 2022). Neil Marshall used close-up shots to create strong emotions in the audience, such as expressions of pain, surp...
