Difference Between English And Chinese In Academic Writing

Research Paper Instructions:

Language Organization Writing Project
Project Topic:
How is academic writing in (another language than English that you will select) the same and/or different from academic writing in the United States?
Process:
You will first select a language that you would like to compare the organization of academic English writing to, one that you may or may not have had personal experience with. Then, you will do some research using the DU databases or Google Scholar, which you will be shown how to do. You must have at least 5 sources, at least two related to English writing style and two related to the other language you choose to investigate. 3 of the sources must be peer-reviewed sources, and for this assignment, academic sources using the databases probably will work best. The other sources, however, can come from credible sources such as Credo-Reference or a respected news source like the New York Times (not Wikipedia). You will mainly paraphrase your sources when you cite them in your essay. You may use quotes, but they must be short and blended effectively.
You may briefly include your own experiences with English writing and those in the language you choose, but personal experiences should only be a small part of the paper and only used to support the evidence found in the sources. They should be genuine experiences. You will need to research both features of English writing and the language you choose to investigate.
Essay Format:
This will be an informative 3-4 page research paper, not including the cover page and references list, written in APA style. Using headings and subheadings to organize your paper will make it easier to read, which style we will also work on in class. You should have Level 1 (cenered) headings, but can also add Level 2 headings (subheadings, at the left margin). You should have these sections below, also seen in the Purdue Owl APA Sample Paper at https://owl(dot)english(dot)purdue(dot)edu/owl/resource/560/18/ :
Cover page
Introduction (this is not typically given a heading as it is at the beginning of the paper)
Literature Review
Discussion
Conclusion
Directions for Future Research
References
Presentation: you will also present your findings to the class in a short 5-6 minute PowerPoint (or Prezi). It should contain 5-6 slides.
Timetable: specific deadlines will be in Canvas. We will have some workshop time in class, plus I will conference with you on your drafts in class. You will also engage in peer review with your classmates as part of the writing process.

The Academic Writing Difference between English and Chinese
Name
Institution
It is quite a herculean task to establish the exact number of languages employed in today’s world. The languages are so many and they differ in many diverse ways. For instance, they differ in sound, writing style and grammar. English and Chinese, which are among the frequently employed languages in the universe, are some of the languages that differ significantly from each other. Consequently, the Chinese students who study in the US find it incredibly difficult to write English academic papers that could meet the standards and expectations of the English professors. Learning about the key differences in the two languages can be paramount so that mistakes made in writing by the students can be forestalled. The following will be an exploration of the major differences found in the English and Chinese academic writing.
Differences in English and Chinese Academic Writing
One of the key differences is that in English academic writing, an emphasis is put on the first section of a sentence while in Chinese academic writing a great emphasis is put on the last part of a sentence. The Chinese give general information on the first part of a sentence then shifts to bringing out the key points in the last part of a sentence (Wang & Chen, 2013). In English, the key points and the primary and detailed information are first established within a sentence then the general or the minor information is pointed out. The difference in the writings can be attributed to the fact that the Chinese and English nations have different thinking patterns. An English nation maintains a straightforward thinking mode, and that is why it sticks to the main points at the very beginning of a sentence. Chinese people on the hand maintain a tortuous thinking mode. Subsequently, they point out the minor information before hitting upon the theme.
The second difference is that the English written academic papers have long sentences while Chinese academic papers have short sentences. In English sentences, it is prevalent to see one very lengthy sentence with an extended modifier (Wang & Chen, 2013). The English sentences maybe long and somehow complicated but individuals still understand them. The situation is different in Chinese sentences, as it is believed that long sentences would be complex and not easily comprehended. Consequently, the Chinese students only maintain short sentences while writing and in the rare cases when long sentences are written, commas must be used to divide the long sentences into short phrases.
The third difference established is the lexical differences in both writings. English word-formation adopts many makes such as affixation and conversion from proper nouns. The situation is different in Chinese word formation because their connections with other characters in their context establish their grammatical functions and definitions. In English, there is the use of ‘we, our, us’ and ‘I, me, mine’ for the first person but in Chinese, we have I, me for the first person (Wang & Chen, 2013). Moreover, the Chinese morphemes prefer a liberal alliance with additional morphemes to depict current and extra complex phrase...
