As a researcher, it is always in the interest of the researcher as well as the readership if the former honors the correct procedures of conducting research. This means that all written and unwritten rules and regulations are followed and the researcher tries his or her best to enhance the credibility of her research. Examples of these written and unwritten rules include the use of current and relevant literature to inform on one’s research, avoiding instances of bias by dissociating oneself with any issues that can lead to an instance of bias in research among others. Every researcher must abide by these rules if their article is to have an impact or be regarded as scientific among researchers. Guevara et al. (2019) delivered a research article that sought to enhance the study of nursing interventions “Teaching: Individual” compared with usual care, to increase adherence to therapeutic regimen in people with hypertension and/or type-2 diabetes.” The research article had a similar name as the aim of the study: “Teaching: Individual “to Increase Adherence to Therapeutic Regimen in People with Hypertension and Type-2 Diabetes: Protocol of the Controlled Clinical Trial ENSURIN. This paper seeks to critique this research article in great depth by focusing on aspects such as the authors, the writing style, the structure of the research article, the title, the aim of the study, literature review, the theoretical framework, the research question, the sample, methodology, analysis, selection bias, results, recommendations for future studies.
The article under review had the topic “Teaching: Individual “to Increase Adherence to Therapeutic Regimen in People with Hypertension and Type-2 Diabetes: Protocol of the Controlled Clinical Trial ENSURIN. People who may not like reading long headings could be discouraged by this because it is long and appears like a normal sentence. However, this particular heading is appropriate for a paper like this because it gifts readers an introduction into the study. This means that before one moves on to the next part of the document, they already have an expectation. But this can also discourage people who are not in the medical field. For this group, short headings with the meaning unhidden are good enough. However, as will be seen later, this article had a particular audience and the authors did their best to make the choice of vocabulary and even topic appeal to this particular audience.
The authors of the article namely Guevara Sandra, Parra Dora, and Rojas Lyda are accomplished academics. Guevara Sandra is “currently working at the School of Nursing, Industrial University of Santander” (ResearchGate, 2020). As per her profile on ResearchGate, Guevara is involved in 9 research studies and she may continue to add to her resume as time goes by. Para Dora is also attached to the School of Nursing, Industrial University of Santander. Her profile is much more accomplished compared to that of her colleagues because she is involved in 24 research articles. However, when it comes to Rojas Lyda, there is little of her online. However, her name does come up in several research articles, for example, Sex steroids, sex hormone-binding globulin and levels of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide in postmenopausal women which was published in 2017. The resumes of these three authors do help enhance the credibility of the article.
From the title there is the structure of the study which is not traditionally written. The article starts with an abstract that offers a great introduction to the study. The abstract offers a great summary of the paper and prepares the readership for what is coming. It summarizes the background section, methodology section, and even the discussion section. This is indeed a complete introduction. However, instead of having a proper introduction, the article goes straight to the background section which can also be described as the literature review. The lack of an introduction can be problematic especially if the background is not thorough enough. However, the background section is indeed through and appears to also double as a literature review albeit less weighty in terms of how comprehensive literature reviews normally are. The background section offers a great introduction and is also loaded with a lot of citations which enhances the credibility of the article. Aside from this, the ...
