Internet traffic refers to all the data communication on a computer network or a computer. When internet traffic is high, the computer network slows down and become overloaded if it cannot hold the load. Too much traffic may hinder the computer or any network device from its normal operations. Internet traffic has several benefits. Internet kill switch entails the creation of a single switch that shut down the internet traffic intending to protect it or the users (Dawgert, 2014). Giving the President of the United States the authority to shut down internet traffic to and from any compromised federal government or U.S critical infrastructure information system is a bad idea. Internet being a distributed communication system worldwide, there would be no central authority; thus, no nation is responsible for it.
Internet is one of the largest disseminated communications systems that has ever been created by humankind. It is too immense and too challenging to be shut down in any way even if it was only limited to federal interconnections. It will be essential to understand what critical infrastructure constitutes. If this authority extends to private sector infrastructure and not only the government, then it would mean that the government would incur huge expenses. The level of federal oversight required would be high. It will be a costly decision that will affect not only the government but also businesses running online. Communication is one of the critical uses of the internet; it would be adversely affected. Crucial information will not be easily shared.
The Internet kill switch will take away freedom of expression. This is because people will be limited to what they can say or post on the internet, thus taking away their freedom of speech. Internet, which is a worldwide web provides people with a platform where they use a high degree of innovation to express their ideas or thoughts. Internet switch kill will take away this vital privilege (Nayak, 2018).
The internet switch kill will give the President the mandate to control the flowing of information. Thus, the President may use this opportunity circulate information for his benefits. Some people always take advantage of the power bestowed to them. The personnel in charge of internet control could undertake illegal practices without fear of any evidence being posted online.
