Use of Symbols, Images, and Themes Established in Macbeth and Frankenstein
In both William Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, there is extensive use of symbolism, imagery, and themes to connect the reader with the intentions of the two authors. In Macbeth, there is the theme of supernatural beings exemplified by witches and evil. Likewise, in Frankenstein, the creature can be described as supernatural and the extraordinary creation of a man. The theme of disloyalty is depicted when Macbeth becomes disloyal to the previous king while Frankenstein shows disloyalty by abandoning the creature he abandoned. There are also contrasting themes, imagery, symbolism employed in both Macbeth and Frankenstein that depicts various messages that the two authors wanted to share. In this paper, a comparison is made on the use of symbols, images, and themes established in Macbeth and Frankenstein.
Similarities
In both Macbeth and Frankenstein, several aspects of the use of symbols, images, and themes are shared. To start with, supernatural theme features in both Macbeth and Frankenstein. Frankenstein’s creation of the creature which was proportionally larger than a human and referred severally as a ‘monster’, a ‘creature’, and a ‘devil’ can be described as a supernatural. In Macbeth, there is the depiction of witchcraft and evil as a theme. William Shakespeare uses a series of supernatural forces to elicit tension and vivid interruptions throughout the play. For instance, Shakespeare depicts several supernatural ghosts that have a vast influence on Macbeth shown throughout the play and how evil manipulate Macbeth who loses his morality. In addition, the Three Witches who predict evil and darkness influencing the life of Macbeth.
Another theme that is common in both Macbeth and Frankenstein is disloyalty. In Macbeth, disloyalty is portrayed when Macbeth murdered King Duncan and betrayed him despite the warm welcome to the castle. Likewise, Frankenstein is disloyal to the very creature he created and abandons the creature after seeing that the creature is revolting and different from what he intended. Another theme that resembles disloyalty is the unethical quest for power and success displayed in both Macbeth and Frankenstein. Both Macbeth and Frankenstein are ambitious and want to achieve success, despite the costs involved. Macbeth desperately wants to become the king and was willing to kill for it. Lady Macbeth is equally ambitious and challenges her husband to proceed with the plans to kill the king immediately.
