Predators
Venezuela
The main reason for disturbance in the Venezuelan forest was the hydro-electric power plants that were erected in the area. Millions of species were trapped in the man-made lake that was once a large forest. The project led to the destruction of the ecosystem. Furthermore, top predators were pushed away. As a result, lots of preys remained with no ‘moderation’ by predators who are supposed to be on top of the food chain. Even worse, trees are dying; lots of old trees have their roots exposed. One can easily spot the cracked nature of the soil; evidence of lack of moisture in the soil and other biological factors. The scientist calls it an unusually strange place because of the transformation that has occurred. Every time he visits the place, he finds drastic changes that threaten the lives of wildlife. The video also shows how Lake Guri and its surrounding only has a few plants and animals who can bear with the conditions. However, the plants that remain are defended with thorns (YouTube, 2019). These are some of the results that manifested after the disturbance.
The unplanned experiment involved the transformation of hilltops into scattered islands. The result of the experiment is a reduced stretch of dead trees and monkeys at the treetops. With the absence of predators and reduced food sources, the monkeys have since crowded into groups. According to the biologist, the confinement has reduced the social space of the animals. In effect, the monkeys tend to be more aggressive; they fight for food. Other animals that are ‘finishing’ the vegetation are the leaf-cutting ants.
Yellowstone
Yellowstone national park is full of diverse wildlife. Mostly, there were thriving willows and a healthy river bank. Along the river, you could see a green stretch of thriving plants. This was the case back then given that the soil around the bank was always rich in nutrients. Mountain lions and wolves used to keep their preys on the run and ‘in check.’ A single kill of a top predator was essential for the ecosystem. The preys were kept away from the vegetation as well as the willow trees. Eagles and other animals would feed on the carcasses of the kill. The vegetation around the kill woul...
