Logistics Network for Warehouse
Designing a logistics network consisting of only one warehouse will be based on several critical factors, including how the location of the warehouse affects transportation times, the operational costs of the supply chain, jl;' as well as the possible amount of inventory. However, at the functional level, the warehouse design process will seek to ensure optimal use of the operation asset by considering flow, accessibility, space, and throughput (Logistics Bureau, 2021). The design of the warehouse will consider how to streamline activities in such a manner that activities follow a logical sequence. One key consideration will be the inventory movement to and from the warehouse: the warehouse has to be situated near the activity preceding it and near the function that follows it. The objective is to reduce lead time by ensuring minimal movement between the warehouse, suppliers, and customers (EuroDecision, 2022). Another helpful consideration in the warehouse design will be accessibility: the warehouse must be reachable to both pickup and delivery operations to allow a smooth flow of inventory into and out of the warehouse.
The warehouse must be centrally placed between preceding and succeeding operations to facilitate the smooth streamlining of new inventory into the warehouse and back out for delivery. The warehouse must also be spacious to allow stock processing, operational storage, and other associated activitieswithout any work backlogk. Moreover, the design of the warehouse must allow for assessment of how inventory is handled along with other essential factors such as demand and types of product, which impact the speed with which certain items move through the facility. It should be relatively easy to determine throughput or the speed at which inventory is flowing through the warehouse. Having accurate throughput data will allow the warehouse manager to regulate inventory flow and avoid unnecessary holding costs from excess inventory or insufficient inventory levels. The steps I would need to take in order to design the optimal network are: defining logistics requirements and network alternatives; identifying present and future service demands; determining transportation, distribution, and service expenses; categorizing alternative networks; evaluating the value-ranking of network options; and picking candidate networks to model (LongPhạm, 2020).
An optimal distribution network is defined as a network that meets logistics demands at the lowest cost.
