The United States has certainly come of age in the implementation of policies aimed at addressing the major problems facing its citizens. However, due to the changing dynamics of society, governments, and civil rights, a need to enact new policies is always on the table. College education in the U.S. has almost become mandatory for every youth aspiring for success in their careers. However, college dropout rates in the recent past have hit alarming statistics, and one of the major causes of this social calamity is that college education is barely affordable. Students from low-income families are more likely to drop out of college, with blacks and Native Americans more likely to discontinue education (Hanson, 2021). Every American has a right to affordable education, and although the government has put in some efforts in terms of student loans, grants, and scholarships, more need to be done hence the college affordability policy.
The low-income earners are the most affected demographic by the high costs of college education. Both the federal government and the states should come up with a strategy to single out the students from low-income earners and offer them subsidies, grants, and even no-interest loans. In addition, the government should compel these students to explore all the possible means that they can attain affordable education to avoid high dropout rates among students from low-income earners, including the automatic grant of scholarship for well-performing students from low income. Out of state tuition in the U.S. is generally high, and students with low social-economic backgrounds often end up dropping out of college because they are unable to attend the colleges of their dream (Campbell, 2020).
