The mid-20th century featured different civil rights groups championing equal rights and freedoms for African Americans, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The association’s efforts in partnership with other organizations gave birth to the Civil Rights Movement, leading to repealing of oppressive laws while also dealing with racial discrimination across the different social domains. Nevertheless, African Americans still face widespread racial discrimination in the United States embedded in institutionalized racism among the state and federal organs. The African Americans’ past struggles for equality provide lessons upon which current organizations such as the Black Lives Matter movement can establish effective frameworks for addressing both the existing and emerging inequalities faced by members of the community.
Walter F. White’s collection of investigative reports on the widespread lynching of African Americans across the Southern states and other parts of the United States makes for interesting revelations on the genesis of racial discrimination against African Americans. In one of the reporter’s engagements with a member of the lynching mob in Georgia, the individual claims that the reason for lynching African Americans was to protect or rather enforce their superiority as Whites CITATION Wal29 \l 1033 (Walter, 1929). The White supremacist beliefs form the basis of racial discrimination against African Americans in the United States, whose extremities entail devaluation and disregard for their lives CITATION Wal29 \l 1033 (Walter, 1929).
