Propaganda in the World War 1 in Britain
Propaganda in World War I was one of the influential tools used by both Britain and Germany to increase their influences on their people and portray each other as evil. Propaganda can be a manipulative systematic effort towards a target audience on their attitudes, beliefs, or actions. Propaganda during the World War 1 was propelled through posters, banners, monuments, music, words, postage stamps, and adverts on commercial breaks, among others. During World War 1, the governments had set goals to be achieved. Therefore, they would use selected facts and arguments and bring them out so that these facts and arguments will have a certain effect on their people (Welch, 2014). Britain's involvement in World War 1 needed support from both genders. Therefore, they had to use propaganda to influence women to take a role in the war, such as in the factories, and compel their men to join the army voluntarily for their security.
One of the famous images used to propagate propaganda so that women would put the war effort is known as "Woman in Britain Say Go." In this image, one can deduce that a family consists of a mother, a young lady, and a male child. The family seems to bid goodbye to their adult male figure who is going to the war. The image carries a lot of sympathy with it, but the family seems determined to let their adult male join the war. The old female represents the mother of the soldier who is volunteering to go to the war. The young lady represents a wife, while the young boy is a representation of a son of the man headed to the war.
The above image indicates that the male figure who is leaving for war is going to fight to protect his family. The family looks sympathetic as they know the war may turn against their solder, but they show hope of being protected against their enemy. This image was used as a form of propaganda so that other women and family members may encourage and support their men and young men to join the war. The propaganda here is that by encouraging the men to join the war, the family members will feel protected.
The image uses the appeal and influence women, and young children can have on their husbands and sons. By using this image, many women will encourage their sons and husbands to join the war. The image makes women put pressure on their husbands. The pressure here is to make the husbands and sons understand that they will protect their families against their enemies by joining the war. As stated above that propaganda uses selected facts and arguments. One fact here is that when the husbands and elder sons join the army, the family will be protected against their enemy (Welch, 2014). On the other hand, women who see the poster will most likely challenge their men and sons to join the army.
