The keywords and terms related to the role of government include citizenship, which entails the right of an individual to belong to a particular country. The second term is the government, which refers to the organized body responsible for making laws that govern the society hence preventing conflicts. Another term associated with the topic is laws, which refer to the rules and regulations considered appropriate for society (Utomo et al., 2020, p. 45). The government should ensure that the country's laws are equal for all citizens. Thus, equality is another term that indicates that the government should establish fair and just laws that do not discriminate against any group of people within the state.
A fair society assists citizens in developing a sense of belonging and working to promote patriotism. Patriotism refers to individual citizens' ability to love and defend their countries from enemies. Thus, patriotic citizens would fight for their country during needs, such as attacks from terrorists. A good government promotes justice to all the members of society. Justice entails treating all citizens equally through equal policies and fair distribution of resources such as health care facilities and education (Utomo et al., 2020, p. 45). The provision of education through the establishment of schools shows the government's dedication to public service. Public service refers to the act of the government of providing different services to all its citizens as a way of serving them.
Historical Events Relevant to the Topic
There are various historical events surrounding the role of the government to citizens within the state of Canada. One of the historical events related to the government's role to its citizens was women's suffrage in 1916. Historically, Canada did not recognize women's right to vote. The voting process was practiced by men, thus promoting gender equality. Women's suffrage was a movement established by the elite Canadian women which advocated for equal rights and gender equality. The pressure brought about women suffrage led the Canadian women to be allowed by their government to cast ballots in 1925 (Domareki, 2018, p.230). By 1951, the Canadian government allowed women to participate in pollical events by seeking political candidature. Thus, the Canadian government revealed its role in promoting gender equality by supporting its women to become political leaders.
The second historical event in Canada is the Canadian Charter of Freedoms of 1982, which gave citizens the right to prevent the government from suppressing them. The Charter empowered the Canadian citizens with the freedom of religion, right to free speech and press, and right to peaceful association and assembly (Newman, 2018, p. 65).
