The harpsichord, a major keyboard instrument during the Baroque era, was primarily employed to give baroque ensembles a distinctive tone. Despite the emergence of new musical genres like opera, concerto, and sonata throughout the baroque era, harpsichord use caused instrumental music to flourish more than music performed without instruments. Resultantly, the need to develop a method of mechanically plucking strings under the keyboard's control led to the invention of the harpsichord.
