Nigeria is a country in West Africa bordering the Gulf of Guinea in the south, Benin in the west, Cameroon in the east and Niger in the north. Nigeria covers a total area of 923,768 sq. km which is distributed as 910,768 sq. km land and 13,000 sq. km water (Nigerian Embassy Sweden, 2016). River Niger runs through the country making it possible to run different agricultural and economic activities. The capital city of Nigeria Abuja which is located center of the country. Nigeria changed the capital city from Lagos to Abuja on December 12, 1991 (Economic Times, 2019). Lagos is a coastal town that was Nigeria capital since 1914 and the growth of Abuja led to the change in the capital city. Nigeria's climate differs from the south having an equatorial climate, tropical for the central region and arid climate for the north (Nigerian Embassy Sweden, 2016).
* Colonial History
Nigeria was colonized by Britain which gained political power for the nation. Britain made slavery illegal in 1807 by controlling the policing of the slave trade (Harvard.Edu, 2020). The indirect control of Britain in Nigeria contributed to agricultural growth especially palm oil and cotton. In the 1850s colonial explorer and missionaries entered Nigeria intending to control the nation. The British influenced African politics in the 1850s and later in 1882 French provided competition in getting colonial powers in Africa. In the 1884-1885 Berlin conference, Nigeria joined nations that were supposed to operate under British powers (Harvard.Edu, 2020). Nigeria was under British governor Frederick Lugard that focused on uniting the northern and southern parts of the nation. In the 1860s Christianity spread in Nigeria with colonial administrators encouraging Christianity to achieve the intended civilization in the country (CIA 2020). The colonial government was unable to bring unity in Nigeria with people being divided across ethnic backgrounds.
British rule changed the social and religious living of Nigerians. The British rule provided formal education, English and spread Christianity in the nation (Britannica, 2020).
