Waiting to obtain an appointment with your MD or sitting for long periods in the Emergency Room can have negative health effects.

You open your social media app and you see a story on your timeline from your local news station that stated the following: Deaths due to long wait times

At Memorial hospital (inpatient and outpatient services), wait times to be seen for the emergency room (ER) and for primary care exceed quality standards. The wait times could range between three to four hours at the ER and an hour or two to be seen at the primary care clinic. Appointments to see a surgeon for surgical procedures are booking out weeks, unfortunately leading to deaths. Because of this, the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is sending a team to conduct an audit. One possible result of the visit could be a reduction or loss of federal funding. Although patients may have to wait longer than expected, the period should not extend to the hours recorded at Memorial hospital. For instance, having patients book for surgical to wait for weeks before implementing the procedures could significantly hurt their health. Thus, while solving wait times is the primary priority, identifying the cause of the problem is critical to obtaining optimal solutions. The extended wait times exceeding standards may originate from lack of adequate medical practitioners, increased number of patients, and lack of sufficient funds to facilitate the provision of equipment to ensure timely medical procedures.

For instance, if the patients reporting kidney failures in the hospitals are increasing, practitioners should consider and raise the need to provide more dialysis machines to ensure they can facilitate the needs of all patients over desirable periods. The memorial hospital should consider patient-centered measures by engaging patients to give reports on the care and quality of services they received during treatment (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2016). This quality measure will pave the way for patients to give feedback on all aspects, including the wait time on every particular visit. Thus, the idea will create awareness as healthcare professionals evaluate the periods to identify any needs for change to work with the standard limits by ensuring patients do not wait for long before receiving care.
