Substance Abuse Among Teenagers
Introduction
My personal research interest is substance abuse, which involves the intake of illicit substances such as alcohol or any other classified drugs without a medical prescription. This is specifically important due to the negative effects that such substances may cause on the physical health of a user and society in general. In most cases, continued usage of drugs and other substances leads to impairment or different forms of distress that can alter individual behavior (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2020). Consequently, the impact of substance abuse poses a grave danger to society if interventions are not put in place to deal with them.
A population of interest that I would like to study in this case involves teenagers who are considered impressionable and easily influenced into substance abuse. This group of individuals forms a significant proportion of the population in the world today. Additionally, teenagers are more inclined at being influenced by their peers to indulge in substance abuse to conform (Worley, 2019). Therefore, any direct consequences of the use of illicit substances by teenagers ominously affect society. This, therefore, forms an important aspect of this population that requires a deeper understanding to determine root causes and possible solutions.
Justification
Substance abuse involves the use of chemical elements to induce an effect on the body without a valid prescription or for non-medicinal purposes. These may include elements such as tobacco, cocaine, alcohol, marijuana, and heroin, among others. As a result, individuals who use these substances can enhance their perception, pleasure, and behavior. The continued use of these drugs can lead to extensive damage to an individual’s physical and mental health (Worley, 2019). More so, individuals can become addicted to the substances used leading to dependence, despite their harmful effects on the body. Consequently, this is an important aspect of health that requires appropriate attention based on its effects.
Teenagers are an important segment of the population that are directly affected by substance abuse. The adolescent stage that occurs during the teenage years is well known for its physical and mental development characteristics, creating a transition from childhood to adulthood. Therefore, the introduction of drugs and other illicit substances to such individuals increases the risk of abuse where the teenager is unable to make an informed choice about usage. More so, the abuse of such substances at this stage can lead to lifelong struggles with addiction, resulting in health problems and societal difficulties (Worley, 2019). Therefore, teenagers form an essential population of study that can help change the tide in the fight against substance abuse glo...
