Evidence-Based Research Skill Module: What type of interventions improve adherence to recommendations on nutritional intake?
Introduction and Key Points
Poor adherence to dietary advice is a major impediment to health in adults. With an increasing number of adults falling prey to chronic conditions, diet is strongly considered a remedy that can help prevent and manage chronic diseases. However, lack of adherence to dietary advice continues to pose major challenges. There are numerous barriers that have been investigated and thought to be the reasons behind poor dietary advice. Some barriers that can hinder dietary advice include factors like lack of dietary knowledge, people’s socioeconomic status, poor communication with the healthcare providers, and the high cost of healthy diets. However, regardless of the factors above, there is a need to develop interventions that can help improve adherence to dietary advice. Today, chronic diseases continue to ravage the world and currently account for millions of deaths globally. Ojo (2019) notes that a condition like cardiovascular disease claims more than 17 million lives every year, while cancer and chronic respiratory diseases claim 9 and 3.9 million lives annually, respectively. Therefore, there is a need to develop measures that can help promote healthy habits to the population that is most vulnerable to chronic diseases.
Article Search
This paper focused solely on Razo-Olvera et al. (2021) ‘Primary Barriers of Adherence to a Structured Nutritional Intervention in Patients with Dyslipidemia.’ The article is within the requirement of being published less than 3 years ago. Further, the article is peer-reviewed and therefore a credible source.
To find an article that aptly responds to the question, the article search used critically acclaimed databases, including the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and PubMed, which gives access to the MEDLINE database. However, the database that happened to produce the article under review is MDPI. Further, the article used came from the peer-reviewed journal titled Nutrients.
Numerous articles were located, especially from the NCBI database. However, a majority of these articles were published years ago. Therefore, they did not match the requirements for the article needed for this summary. The search terms or phrases used include ‘barriers to adherence to dietary advice’ and ‘interventions to improve adherence to dietary advice.’
Article Findings
The article by Razo-Olvera et al. (2021) addresses the topic of possible interventions to help enhance adherence to dietary advice or recommendations on nutritional intake by focusing primarily on structured nutritional intervention. In the study, the researchers made use of several structured strategies that included “three face-to-face visits and two telephone follow-up visits” (Razo-Olvera et al., 2021). The type of research conducted was quantitative research, which mainly entails the use of data and statistics.
As per the research conducted, the results showcased that there are several barriers to structured nutritional intervention str...
