Clinical Question
Problem Description
The primary focus of the group's work is to research the survey of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). HAIs have remained a significant problem that needs to be eliminated. In particular, some patients stay longer in hospitals due to infections they acquire while getting treatment for specific health problems. That is why these infections should be identified so that proper prevention strategies can be implemented to eradicate them. Usman Abubakar suggests that effective infection control and prevention strategies need gathering reliable data and knowing the epidemiology of HAIs (Abubakar, 2020). That is the problem that the group focuses on to prevent HAIs occurrence in the future.
Significance of the Problem in Terms of Patient Outcomes
Specifically, proper research on the survey of HAIs will address numerous health problems that prolong patients' stay in hospitals. Effective HAIs prevention strategies can only be implemented by determining the sources of these infections. In a study conducted by Abubakar, 321 patients were surveyed for HAIs. Fifty HAIs among 46 sick individuals were identified, which translated into the point-prevalence of about 14.3% (Abubakar, 2020). The common HAIs included bloodstream infection with 38%, pneumonia with 12%, and surgical site infections with 32%. The highest prevalence of infections was neonatal with 53%, surgeries with 10.1%, and pediatric surgeries with 26.7% (Abubakar, 2020). The researcher also identified that the majority of HAIs are acquired when patients are admitted to the hospital. According to the 2018 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in approximately 31 patients admitted to hospitals in the United States of America (USA), at least one acquires HAIs (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). Additionally, bathing with chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) has been found to reduce HAIs for hospitalized patients (Musuuza et al., 2019). That is why the group has decided to focus on this problem and identify ways to eliminate it to promote patients' health in hospitals.
PICOT Question in Support of the Group Topic
The following PICOT question will significantly help prevent HAIs and promote patients' well-being. For patients admitted in hospitals under the age of 70 years, washing hands regularly, disinfecting and cleaning surfaces, bathing with CHG, and providing infection control education can decrease the future risk of HAIs compared with the overreliance on the identification of specific infections in different healthcare institutions.
Purpose of the Paper
The paper's primary purpose is to identify distinctive strategies that can be implemented in hospitals to prevent HAIs that prolong patients' stay in health institutions. For example, based on the PICOT question, some significant HAIs prevention strategies include washing hands regularly, cleaning or disinfecting surfaces, and offering infection control education.
