Introduction
My personal research interest is substance abuse among teenagers. Substance abuse among teenagers is a growing problem in our society. Substance abuse among teenagers is a serious problem that can harm their health, academic performance, and overall well-being. According to Kaggwa et al. (2022), several factors contribute to substance abuse among teenagers, including peer pressure, curiosity, and a need to fit in. Additionally, teenagers may use substances to cope with stress or numb themselves from emotional pain. The consequences of substance abuse are potentially severe and long-lasting. Kaggwa et al. (2022) state that teens who abuse substances are more likely to experience academic problems, mental health issues, and addiction later in life. Furthermore, substance abuse can lead to accidental injuries, violence, and even death. It is essential to be aware of substance abuse signs and get help. Some signs of substance abuse include changes in mood or behavior, withdrawing from friends and activities, and neglecting responsibilities. Many resources are available to teenagers struggling with substance abuse, including hotlines, support groups, and treatment programs.
The patient population that is most affected is teenagers. Thus, there is a specific interest in studying this clinical problem among them. Several interventions are available to help teenagers struggling with substance abuse. These interventions can be divided into three main categories: medical, psychological, and social (Das et al., 2016). Medical interventions for substance abuse among teenagers typically involve the use of medication to help detoxify the body and manage withdrawal symptoms. Das et al. (2016) argue that medication may also be used in some cases to help treat underlying mental health conditions contributing to substance abuse. Psychological interventions for substance abuse among teenagers typically involve counseling and therapy. It can help teenagers identify and address the underlying causes of their substance abuse and to develop healthier coping mechanisms. Social interventions for substance abuse among teenagers typically involve connecting the teenager with supportive social networks. These networks include peer support groups, family therapy, and community-based programs.
Justification
From personal thinking, substance abuse among teenagers is a critical area to study because of the significant problems this abuse poses to them. Bivin & Riaz (2017) also argue that it is crucial to study substance abuse among teenagers because substance abuse can lead to severe problems later in life. Substance abuse among teenagers is often the result of peer pressure, family problems, and a lack of knowledge of the risks involved.
