Is Implicit Bias Real?
The results from the test met my expectations. From the definition, implicit bias is having a preference for a person or group of people rather than being neutral (FitzGerald, & Hurst, 2017). From the test, there is a higher moderate preference for European Americans compared to African Americans. This is expected to occur since people are more likely to prefer individuals of their own when offering services rather than remaining neutral. Although it is a wrong experience, it occurs without one noticing that their actions can impact others negatively. Implicit bias has been experienced in different parts of the world, and its damage can be cited in various sectors, especially in health care. Although implicit bias occurs without notice, people must be cautious of their actions since they can affect others.
Although the results from the test matched the expectations, implicit bias can hinder the reporting of prenatal drug exposure. A health care worker that is implicit biased cannot report cases of prenatal drug exposure from their preferred patient (Charlesworth et al., 2022). Health care workers should be encouraged to report suspicion of prenatal drug and alcohol abuse without any implicit bias. Similarly, cases of child abuse and neglect should be encouraged. A state should intervene.
Is implicit bias real, and should it be considered when considering mandatory reporting laws?
Implicit bias is real but should not be considered when mandatory reporting law. Implicit bias is a form of favoring that cannot be accepted regarding mandatory reporting laws. For example, cases of prenatal drug and alcohol abuse should be reported without implicit bias. Equally, cases of child abuse and neglect should be reported without implicit bias.
