Assessment Description
Students will identify a specific evidence-based topic for the capstone project change proposal. Students should consider the clinical environment in which they are currently employed or have recently worked(Pediatric Home Health). The capstone project topic can be a clinical practice problem, an organizational issue, a leadership or quality improvement initiative, or an unmet educational need specific to a patient population or community. The student may also choose to work with an interprofessional collaborative team.
Students should select a topic that aligns to their area of interest as well as the clinical practice setting in which practice hours are completed.
Write a 500-750 word description of your proposed capstone project topic. Include the following:

Pediatric Nursing Shortage and Increased Retention
Nurses are the primary care providers in the healthcare setting. Despite their critical role in the healthcare setting, the nursing shortage is a major problem that continues to adversely affect the healthcare system. The projection is worrisome given that child and family nurse is made up of fewer subspecialty nurses compared to other subspecialties. At the same time, there is a shrinking pool of pediatric faculty available in the future (Suárez et al., 2018). The allocation of additional healthcare resources to a growing population of elder citizens means that fewer resources are available to pediatric nursing. There is a need to address the pediatric nursing shortage by improving the retention rate among child and family nurses.
The US is projected to experience a nursing shortage of registered nurses (RNs) as Baby Boomers age and the demand for healthcare services increases (Smiley et al., 2018). The Baby Boomers require intensive care, which necessitates the need to allocate more nurses to their care (Price & Reichert, 2017). As a result, the number of available pediatric nurses reduces as more nurses are diverted toward caring for the aged. Additionally, nursing schools in the US are struggling to expand their capacity to meet the increasing demand (Challinor, Alqudimat, Teixeira & Oldenmenger, 2020). Fewer nurses are choosing the pediatric specialty, further limiting the number of available nurses. Additionally, the number of retiring pediatric nurses and those choosing to leave the profession is increasing, hence leaving a gap (Bush, Coleman, Wall & West-Burnham, 2018).
The pediatric nursing shortage has adverse effects on the healthcare system. Firstly, it leads to increased faculty workload (Drennan & Ross, 2019). The remaining nurses are forced to deal with a relatively large number of patients. The increased workload leads to burnout among pediatric nurses. Secondly, the shortage increases the mobility rate among children. The inability of the pediatric nurses to care for the children means poor outcomes for the population, which increases mortality rates. Thirdly, pediatric shortage increases patient dissatisfaction among the patients (Shah et al., 2021). The inability of the few nurses to meet the needs of the high population leads to poor services. Clients are dissatisfied, which also adversely affects the reputation of the specialty. Lastly, the nursing shortage leads to a high turnover of pediatric nurses (Xu et al., 2020). More nurses are moving to other professions they consider more lucrative and with more flexible working terms. This leaves the pediatric specialty further deprived of a skilled workforce.
