Introduction
Liu et al. (2020) evaluated the nutritional risks faced by older adults diagnosed with COVID-19. The researchers used four common nutritional screening tools, NRS 2002, MNA-sf, NRI, and MUST, to measure the nutritional risks facing the older adults and their clinical significance. The authors identified a key gap was the lack of a link between poor nutrition in older adults and clinical outcomes. In essence, the main aim of the study was to examine the link between nutritional risk in older adults and clinical outcomes.
Methods
The inclusion criteria for participants were COVID-19 diagnosis, age of 65 years and above, and a hospital length of stay of more than 24 hours. Patients with incomplete data, chronic disease, and mild COVID-19 were excluded from the study. In regards to the nutritional assessment tools, NRS 2002 was used on two levels, the first one assessing weight loss history, BMI status, disease severity, and nutritional intake, and the second one grading the seriousness of the factors. MNA-sf was used to measure undernourishment in terms of BMI, weight loss, food intake loss, physical stress, and mobility. While MUST was used to identify the nutritional treatment need of the participants, NRI assessed the nutritional risk index. The assessment by the four tools allowed the researchers to place the participants in either the nutritional risk group or the normal group. In regards to statistical analysis, the performance of the tools in predicting worse clinical results was measured by operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The parameters measured included hospital expenses, length of hospital stay, loss of appetite, and weight loss.
