Physical activity as an evidence-based practice in the management of diabetes
Even though there's no diabetes cure, regular physical activity is an evidence-based practice that improves blood glucose control and prevents or delays the occurrence of type 2 diabetes. Structured interventions involving regular physical activity and modest weight loss lower the risks of suffering from type 2 diabetes by 58% in high-risk populations (Colberg et al., 2010). In older patients, gardening, housework, and brisk walking for at least 30 min every day are required to minimize the risk of Type 2 diabetes (Hamasaki, H. (2016). On the other hand, while both supervised and unsupervised forms of exercise are important in managing diabetes, supervised aerobic and supervised resistance exercise is more effective in improving HbA1c and weight loss than unsupervised aerobic (Pan et al., 2018). In hospital settings, the benefits of regular physical activity on diabetes management are realized through chronic and acute improvements in insulin action, cardiovascular events, lipids, and overall quality of patients' lives.
Summary of articles
Hamasaki, H. (2016). Daily physical activity and type 2 diabetes: A review. World journal of diabetes, 7(12), 243. (/pmc/articles/PMC4914832/)
The article "Daily physical activity and type 2 diabetes: A review" by Hamasaki examines the relationship between type 2 diabetes and physical activity. The article indicates that physical activity improves glycemic control and reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes patients suffering from cardiovascular disease. Despite physical activity playing a crucial role in the management of diabetes, the article indicates that older patients suffering from type 2 diabetes may struggle to engage in the recommended levels of activity because they are physically weak. As a result, relative physical exercise such as gardening, housework, and walking for 30 minutes every day suits older patients. In healthcare settings, patients with impaired glucose tolerance should engage in frequent rounds of walking. The findings presented by Hamasaki are based on a review of numerous peer-reviewed articles.
