The frequency of cases of mood disorders is lower in older people compared to adults. Bipolar disorders and adult's depression are linked to negative impacts such as increased cases of suicide and cognitive deficits among others (Bourin, 2001). The primary cause of psychiatric illnesses in adults is a mood disorder (Montgomery & Åsberg, 1979). The purpose of this paper is to explain some of the methods that can be used to asses and treat adults and geriatric clients who have mood disorders symptoms.
The case regarding a 32-year-old Hispanic man who is fighting a major depressive disorder is analyzed. An analysis of three decisions to be made regarding the prescription of medication is discussed. A specified medication is selected at each decision point and a description of why each decision is made discussed.
According to the background of the client, he has no other health issue apart from depression. However, he complains of pain and stiff shoulders which can be linked to the type of work he performs. The client reports of poor concentration which has negatively affected his work. Besides he has insomnia which is progressively getting worse.
Mental Status Exam
The mental status exam exhibits that the client is endorsing the feeling of depression although he is denying homicidal or suicidal ideation. The client also does not have any visual or auditory hallucinations. There is also an absence of paranoia and delusions.
Decision 1: Begin Effexor XR 37. 5 mg orally daily
Effexor raises the level of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain cells (Montgomery, 2008). It is, therefore, an antidepressant medication that works in the brain to correct prime depressive disorders. The drug raises the level of energy as well as improving the mood. This makes the drug perfect for the condition of our Hispanic male client.
