Fall Prevention - Evidence Based Practice Paper

Research Paper Instructions:

Identify research findings that are relevant to nursing's concerns with the use of information technology, to communicate research findings, and to critique the current research and epidemiological literature.
Section 1 - Problem Identification - Chosen problem is Patient Falls and Fall prevention in nursing
What is the problem? Provide definition or description of the problem. How are people affected with the problem? What complications occur when the problem is not addressed. What are the statistics of how many people are affected in US in the world?
Section 2 -Guidelines
What are guidelines to overcome this problem? How are the guidelines not working to eradicate the problem?
Section 3-Innovative Strategies
What other types of interventions could help?
Section 4 - Literature Review (Must include 3 current primary quantitative resources) - within last 5 yrs.
Describe the Literature review process followed by key literature review findings.
Findings from Literature Review
Describe the kinds of studies that you found and why you selected the specific 3 for critical analysis.
Section 5 - Critical Analysis and Evaluation of Literature
A critical analysis and evaluation of the literature are reflected in Table 1. You do not need to do a narrative of the 5 primary research studies in this section. You only need to enter the necessary information into the table.
Grading Rubric for the First Draft:
Problem Identification = 30%
Describe the pertinent clinical problem and describe the effects of this problem with references.
For example: If it is resistant hypertension, define what that is. Tell how many people are affected by this problem. Tell what the consequences of this problem are?
Describe the current guidelines that have been recommended to overcome this problem with references.
Provide a rationale for a new and innovative protocol that may resolve the problem (with a protocol that will complement the guidelines that are in existence now or develop a new evidence based practice protocol that is supported by your 3 current primary research articles).
You may find your protocol idea by searching the databases for current research articles or literature reviews on this topic.
You may find systematic reviews or case studies for ideas of discussion in this section, but you need 3 primary research articles in order to develop your EBP protocol.
Only primary research articles provide the details of interventions with the operational definitions that were used as outcome data for the research projects.
Literature Review = 40%
The literature search process is described. The description is how you searched the databases for the primary research articles for your protocol.
The literature review needs to be comprehensive and current.
This means your search process is comprehensive to gain a historical perspective of research for the topic. However, the research that is appropriate for your protocol and critical analysis needs to be current within the last 5 years, in English, and from different sources.
The selected research articles need to be clearly relevant to the proposed innovation.
Your studies could focus on how to reduce a problem in the clinical setting. This could be a new type of hospital-wide protocol, an educational program for nurses to learn the skills associated with the protocol, and strategies to bring about compliance with the protocol.
You should report why you decided that the selected research articles were relevant to your decision to critically analyze the studies.
Review results are concisely summarized and synthesized. This means that you identified the general focus of all of the 3 selected studies and reported the types of research designs that were used to do the studies. Tell why you chose to include the studies for critical analysis and why you excluded studies for critical analysis. Also tell what their interventions and outcomes were. Tell what journals published those selected articles.

Fall Prevention - Evidence Based Practice Paper Name Institution Fall Prevention – Evidence Based Practice Paper Problem Identification The rising cost of healthcare calls for reviewing of various practices in hospitals and care centers to reduce or rather prevent the occurrence of preventable injuries as well fatalities. Patient falls form one of the major issues posing a challenge to the healthcare sector and towards which health facilities are making huge investments to reduce its adverse effects on patients and the healthcare industry. The unprecedented or unintentional fall of an individual to the ground or lower level while still under the care of a healthcare practitioner is what is known as a patient fall. The healthcare issue may result in bodily harm on the patients or even lead to death in fatal occasions. Patient falls may lead to serious bodily injuries such as fracturing of important parts of the body as well as trauma to the head. Such outcomes lead to additional costs of healthcare as patients have to extend their days in the hospital for treating injuries incurred. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, healthcare facilities treat fall-related injuries to elderly patients every 13 seconds across the United States CITATION Qui15 \l 1033 (Quigley, 2015). An elderly person succumbs to fall-related injuries every 20 minutes while also leading to 55% of all the traumatic head injuries to children aged between 1 to 15 years CITATION Qui15 \l 1033 (Quigley, 2015). According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, out of 1 million patients hospitalized in the United States 700, 000 turn out to be victims of patient falls CITATION Age19 \l 1033 (Quality, 2019). The agency further puts the number of falls among patients in-home care facilities to be 800, 000 annually, which is approximately 50% of the patients under such facilities in the United States CITATION Age19 \l 1033 (Quality, 2019). Guidelines The Joint Commission recently provided a set of guidelines upon which the healthcare facilities in the United States can develop their diverse frameworks for implementing both interventional and preventive measures for curbing patient falls. The guidelines provided by the Joint Commission indicate a tactical strategy, which emphasizes the assessment of risk factors for falls and the patients who are at the highest risk of falling under care. The guidelines provided include increased awareness over patient falls among practitioners and the need to implement prevention measures CITATION The15 \l 1033 (Commission, 2015). The commission also proposes a collaborative effort among the different healthcare disciplines towards reducing the risk of falls, use of a standard approach to assess and identify the risk factors for patient falls as well as developing customized plans for patients whose risk factors for falls are already identified CITATION The15 \l 1033 (Commission, 2015). The other steps provided by the commission towards addressing the problem of patient falls calls for the standardization of the patient falls interventional measures and the effective management of patients after the fall CITATION The15 \l 1033 (Commission, 2015). Nevertheless, the guidelines have not been achieving...
