Impacts of Nursing Shortage and How to Deal with the Issue
In the world today, the patient-nurse ratio continues to widen, and this has introduced the problem of nursing shortage that continues to infringe on the healthcare of today’s society. Some of the effects of nursing shortage include higher dissatisfaction rates for nurses, higher turnover rates, an increase in medical errors, higher mortality rates, a less desire to join the profession, and higher morbidity. These problems are detrimental to the productivity of a country and the world. News articles and journals online attribute the nursing shortage to a few factors, including faculty shortage, population growth, among other factors. But are their approach credible? Is there really a nursing shortage while there are thousands of nurses who cannot secure jobs in the healthcare sector? What if the nursing shortage problem is manufactured? What if the conditions available in the workspace makes it impossible for the nursing career to attract new recruits? This essay thus seeks to downplay the nursing shortage issue by addressing the issue of older nurses not retiring, inadequate staffing in the healthcare sector, and the problem of having an undesirable nursing profession.
Reports continue to indicate that the nursing shortage issue is impacting healthcare. However, fewer reports seek to challenge the idea of having an older working force in the healthcare sector. The older the nurses, the lesser their productivity, and this by itself could induce a ‘nursing shortage’ problem. Uthaman et al. (2015) write that even though older nurses are more skilled and productive than younger nurses, they are vulnerable to the mental demands of the field. However, the article takes a different turn when it suggests that the healthcare sector needs to change to fit the needs of an older working force. The solution should be retiring this old workforce and recruiting a new and vibrant young one. But the above does not happen. Auerbach et al. (2014) note that registered nurses are delaying retirement. The researchers continue to write that between 1969 and 1990, “for a given number of RN’s working at age fifty, 47 percent were still working at age sixty-two and 9 percent were working at age sixty-nine.” The researchers continue to write that between 1991 and 2012, the proportions changed and were 74 and 24 percent at ages of 62 and 69 respectively. In delaying retirement, the older registered nurses are blocking the recruitment of a young and vibrant workforce that will be able to handle the mental demands of the profession.
Aside from the above, there is also the problem of inadequate staffing. Numerous healthcare institutions have been accused of inadequate staffing. Nursing is a numbers game. This simply means that the more the number of nurses, the higher the chances that healthcare outcomes will be enhanced. On the other hand, fewer nurses will negatively impact care. Rosenberg and Mechcatie (2019) note that the lower the staffing levels of registered nurses, the higher the chances there will be missed care. Aside from the above, patient confidence will c...
