Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) remains the most prevalent postoperative infection for patients undergoing gynecologic procedures. Over the years, there have been numerous initiatives that are geared towards preventing CAUTI among gynecologic patients. However, despite the concerted efforts, there has been very minimal success in the strategies due to the increased use of the process in most hospitals. This research paper utilizes a systematic review and a peer-reviewed qualitative study in order to organize and prioritize the various interventions that meant to prevent CAUTI.
The systematic review that was utilized in this study is by Christine Chu and Lily Arya (2014) titled Prevention of Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection Following a Gynaecologic Surgery: A Systematic Review which was meant to systematically examine the efficiency of chemoprophylaxis for the prevention of CAUTI during a short period catheterization following a gynaecologic procedure. The evidence acquisition was completed by conducting a systematic review of Pub/Med/Medline, Scopus, and Cochrane Library. The peer reviewed qualitative study was by Molly Harrod et al (2013) titled Variations in risk perceptions: A qualitative study of unnecessary urinary catheter use continues to be problematic.
The systematic review on one hand explains how antibiotics can be used effectively in the treatment of CAUTI. Two out of the three studies that were included in the systematic review established that there was a reduction of UTI after treatment with antibiotics. However, the remaining six studies established that there was no significant reduction of UTI after a catheter surgery.
