For this assignment, Mike Welsh’s case has been chosen for review and reflection. Mike Welsh had been a Sergeant Major serving in the military, for over twenty seven years. He had a lot of experience in the army and during the time of the injury, he and his team had been in Afghanistan on a mission. In their convoy, they came across a car rigged with explosives packed by the road and when they approached the car bomb went off (Traumaticbraininjuryatoz.org, 2014). From the explosion, Mike suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury, which he and his family have been battling with. With the support from his wife, he has been able to manage the trauma, family life, medical follow up and his current employment.
If I had been the one in Mike’s position, it would have felt really difficult considering the level of struggle that I have to deal with all along (Traumaticbraininjuryatoz.org, 2014). It is very hard to imagine being in a position where most of the short term memory is lost, which means that even holding a meaningful conversation is a tedious amount of work. The thought of never having a normal relationship with my family, can trigger suicidal thought. This is especially due to the fact that most of the time it may feel like I am a burden to those around me.
