Healthy People 2020 Scholarly Writing

The purpose of this assignment is to explore the Healthy People 2020 initiatives from the United States Department of Health and Human Services related to the topic of substance abuse, and identify how a professional in your role may contribute to the objectives. Your topic must be substantially different from any topic you chose for your other papers. Review and expand on class materials and the relevant literature for evidence to describe the problem and strategies currently implemented and under investigation to reduce the problem or meet the objective. Include data relative to incidence, prevalence, and effects in your description of the problem. Describe the role your discipline (career) plays in achievement of this objective, discussing primary, secondary, and tertiary interventions.

Use your reading assignments and Shimberg Library to support the debate points and prepare your paper in 1200 words, using a minimum of 5 peer reviewed references.  Keep in mind that a paper in APA format prohibits the use of personal pronouns (I, you, we, us, me, etc).  Do not use quotations.  Make every effort to use descriptive words that accurately convey your meaning.

All papers in this course require formative feedback to enable “process writing”. We will also use “Turnitin”. Anything that is not properly cited must be revised before you submit for summative evaluation. Students must achieve < 10% match at the time of summative evaluation.

Use of these criteria will keep you organized for a successful paper:

1. Introduction
   1. Clearly describe the properly cited Healthy People Objective relating to substance abuse that is the focus of the paper.
   2. Describe the purpose of the paper.
   3. Body
      1. Describe the population characteristics (culture, age, gender)
      2. Describe the problem including incidence, prevalence, and if applicable, morbidity and mortality.
      3. Using the student’s field of study as a framework (please describe) include specific examples of the following interventions, using peer reviewed references
         1.                                                               i.      Primary interventions
         2.                                                             ii.      Secondary interventions
         3.                                                           iii.      Tertiary interventions
         4.                                                            iv.      Known successful interventions in your field of study

   1. Make a recommendation for action based on the strongest evidence
   2. Style
      1. Carefully proof read your paper for effective use of language, without errors in grammar and spelling. Ensure there are appropriate transitions from one section to the next. Avoid use of slang and avoid meaningless phrases (see APA, Ch 4).
      2. Use APA format to set up the paper, citations in body of the paper, and the reference list.
      3. Use a minimum of 5 peer reviewed, current (< 5 yrs) references
