At Johns Hopkins Hospital, Epic System is the default health information system that is used not only by the hospital but by the entire John Hopkins Medicine enterprise. According to Saluvan and Ozonoff (2018), healthcare information systems allow healthcare providers to reduce errors and improve documentation of patient information. At Johns Hopkins Hospital, the Epic System has served this purpose because it has facilitated registration and admission of patients, prescriptions of drugs through ePrescibing, documentation of charges, and clinical documentation (Johns Hopkins Medicine, n.d.). This system also facilitates sharing of patient information across Johns Hopkins affiliates and referral physicians.
A standard health care information system has several components. The first component is the system inputs. This includes all the resources that are necessary for the functionality of the system (Wickramasinghe, 2017). They include human resources, financial resources, and information and communication technology among others. Regulatory authority and enacted laws are also part of the health information system’s inputs. At Johns Hopkins, the inputs of the health care information system include the personnel who receive patients, document their clinical information, medical bills and discharge information (Johns Hopkins Medicine, n.d.). Further, the Epic System has facilitated the fulfillment of requirements provided by the federal government concerning electronic medical records. Secondly, a health care information system comprises processes, which includes data sources, data management, and indicators (Wickramasinghe, 2017). Data sources basically include all sources that provide the hospital with relevant information such as individual records and community records. Johns Hopkins health care information system obtains information from internal activities such as patient medical and billing information. Externally, the most reliable data sources are from referring health providers and community-based programs (Johns Hopkins Medicine, n.d.). Data management involves data collection, storage, processing, and analysis. At Johns Hopkins, information is collected from patients who submit their personal information. The Epic System has made it easier for information to be collected and securely stored, thus enhancing confidentiality and reliability.
