EBP on Maternity Nurses Concerning Postpartum Hemorrhage
The quality of patient care increases through the adoption of evidence-based practice. It also reduces the cost of health care and grants nurses and medical practitioners an opportunity to integrate the best evidence. Therefore, best clinical decisions are arrived at through evidence-based practice, which uses the best scientific evidence combined with clinical experience, including predilections in professional nursing care and the patients' values to settle on the best clinical decisions (Brown, 2017).
According to World Health Organization, it defines postpartum hemorrhage is based on how it takes place. For that reason, primary postpartum hemorrhage is the loss of blood from the tract of genital in the initial twenty-four hours after delivery, usually in a volume of five hundred millimeters or more. On the other hand, it defines secondary postpartum hemorrhage as blood loss in the volume of five hundred millimeters or extra from the tract of the genitalia past twenty-four hours after delivery. Most of the deaths resulting from this medical problem do happen in the initial four hours after giving birth, with more than seventy percent being linked to primary postpartum hemorrhage. The major cause of primary postpartum hemorrhage is uterine atony. There are chances of atony resulting in enlargement of the uterus. The secondary postpartum hemorrhage causes distention of the bladder, coagulation defects, the rupturing of the uterine, lacerations, abnormalities in the placenta, and infections (Schorn, 2015). Furthermore, postpartum hemorrhage can be managed or prevented if women get medical assistance from a skilled doctor or nurse with the necessary support and backup. In that regard, nurses play a pivotal role in monitoring patients' status by educating them on their conditions, coming up with measures to control the bleeding when it happens, and offering support to both the women and their families.
The nursing care measures applied to patients are mainly geared towards ensuring a restoration in the balance of fluids, ceasing the bleeding, promoting perfusion of tissue, and preventing injury. For all postpartum complications, emotional support for the patient and their family is usually part and parcel of the patient care, an explanation of all the events is therefore instrumental in limiting the fear and anxiety, the family should also be made aware of the situation, including a description of the laboratory tests, procedures, and signs that would depict improvement. Therefore it is vital to increase the nurses' competencies about issues that deal with obstetric care, principally postpartum hemorrhage.
The Iowa Model evidence-based health education program could be used by nurses who are learning or the clinicians on the evidence-based practice process and add to clinicians' training resulting in acquiring the required skills and initiating evidence-based practice in dealing with postpartum hemorrhage. In the research conducted, the researchers tried to apply for the EBP program regarding postpartum hemorrhage on maternity nurses t...
