Preliminary Literature Review
A study by Murni, Duke, Kinney, Daley, & Soenarto (2015) indicates that increased hand hygiene is an effective way of preventing HIAs among children. The article is relevant because it highlights the effectiveness of hand hygiene campaigns in reducing the transmission of the HAIs. The research design is a prospective before and after research comprising of three periods: pre-intervention, intervention, and post-intervention. The study was conducted for 27 months where all the children in the pediatric care units and wards were observed. Data was obtained using the identical approach in both the pre-intervention and post-intervention periods. The assessment of the HAIs followed the criteria outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Fernando, Gray, & Gottlieb (2017) assert that hospitals should invest in hand hygiene, hospital cleanliness, hospital disinfection developing strategies and guidelines for preventing HAIs. The article is relevant since it provides for ways hospital facilities can employ to prevent infections. It emphasizes the need for healthcare professionals to collaborate to address the problem. The article utilizes a systematic review approach to address the issue. It reviews the relevant literature to identify various ways that hospitals can follow to prevent HAIs in the wards.
According to Caselli, et al. (2018), HAI has become a global concern with the growing drug resistance of the HAI-causing bacteria. One of the ways of addressing the problem is ensuring a high level of sanitation. The authors outline that hospital surfaces are persistently contaminated with pathogens which acts as a reservoir for spreading diseases. The article determines the application of the probiotic-based cleaning system in reducing the pathogens associated with HAIs. The research design involved a pre-post intervention research evaluating surface contamination and the prevalence of HAI. The research was conducted for six months for six public hospitals in Italy. The intervention included the introduction of probiotic-based cleaning system sanitation and replacing it with the chemical-based products. The results demonstrated a reduction in HAIs with the use of the probiotic-based cleaning system.
Research conducted by Donskey (2013) explores if ensuring surface cleaning and disinfection is an effective method of reducing HAIs. The article indicates that contaminated surfaces have the potential to transmit pathogens. The systematic review examines if environmental disinfection could reduce transmission of pathogens and subsequently reduce HAIs. The researcher searched the MEDLINE electronic database and included the articles which focused on environmental cleaning and disinfection as the primary intervention. The article is relevant because it emphasizes the need for healthcare facilities to disinfect surfaces and equipment as one of the approaches to addressing the issue.
Research by Dogru et al. (2010) examines the rate and effect of infections due to devices and the rate of antibiotic resistance in the intensive care unit (ICU). The researchers bel...
