Controversial Treatments (Elimination Diets)

Research Paper Instructions:

Numerous controversial treatments are promoted for individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Almost all behavior analysts agree that these treatments lack sufficient empirical support. These treatments include facilitated communication, sensory integration, hyperbaric oxygen chambers, elimination diets, chelation therapy, floortime, and more. Conduct an Internet search for information on one of the topics mentioned above. If you would like to choose a topic not listed, first message your instructor for approval to be sure it is not evidence based. Also research the treatment in the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysisor other professional ABA journals.
-Identify at least one pro statement that supports the use of the treatment. These may come from experts, therapists, parents, or others. -Also, identify at least one con statement that opposes or refutes the treatment.
-Summarize these statements and evaluate your findings. Discuss at least three relevant ethics codes that you have learned in this course thus far.
-Explain how to effectively evaluate treatments to determine if they are evidence based or not.
-Explain, in your conclusion, how you would discuss the importance of using evidence-based strategies with colleagues and the families with whom you work while also respecting other professions and the people involved.

This statement is made by various ‘experts’ in psychology who strongly advocate for elimination diets. The elimination diet ensures that the food taken by the person with an autism spectrum disorder is devoid of certain components. Particularly, the supporters of this elimination advocate for the elimination of proteins, casein, and gluten. These supporters argue that these proteins may disrupt brain activity, thereby increasing the characteristics of autism. Following is a con statement that refutes the use of elimination diets: “there lacks enough scientific evidence to support the efficacy of elimination diets in the treatment of autism spectrum disorder.” This con statement was obtained from the National Institute of Health website.
The pro statement made above may be misleading, especially due to the lack of adequate scientific evidence to support it. In modern psychological practice, scientific evidence plays a key role in guiding practice. The good thing about scientific evidence is that various controls and measures have been taken to ensure that practice is likely to produce the intended results. Where there is a lack of evidence, then the practice becomes some sought of gambling which is severely unethical. The con statement is more believable since it binds itself to scientific evidence. It essentially takes the position that therapy or practice should be avoided until there is enough scientific evidence to validate it (National Institute of Health, 2022).
Following are some three relevant codes of ethics. First, every patient has a right to...
