Autism is a condition that continues to baffle health professionals for several reasons. First, there has not been a distinct way to define the disorder. Second, the disorder is complicated, multi-faceted, and manifests invariable ways (Masi et al., 2017). It is probably because of this reason that researchers are yet to invent a cure to combat autism. As a health professional, I have to contend with a myriad of challenges when handling autistic children. One of the challenges is cultivating and nurturing a positive and professional relationship with the parents of autistic children. That calls for me to have exceptional qualities.
For health professionals to be effective when handling ASD cases, having certain outstanding qualities comes in quite handy. First, they should be efficient communicators to help the parents understand the condition better. On the other hand, they should be able to listen carefully to the parents of autistic children (AIHT Education, n.d.). Doing so helps a professional understand the challenges the parents are facing. Second, professionals must be passionate about their occupations. Handling autistic children can sometimes become strenuous and demanding; without passion, one may easily give up on their patients. Third, professionals handling ASD cases must have a high degree of honesty and integrity. Professionals with these qualities will provide correct information to the parents. In addition, they will refrain from withholding vital information from the parents. Integrity also helps them to uphold confidentiality.
Family members of autistic children, more often than not, become emotionally and financially stressed. In some instances, they have to contend with stigma. These circumstances can become overwhelming, and the family members may suffer from depression over time. It is incumbent upon health professionals to help such family members navigate the rough patch. They can do this by being empathetic. Understanding and sharing the feelings of parents of autistic children is crucial in helping them cope with their situation.
