Contrast Resolution
Contrast resolution refers to the aspect of distinguishing between objects so that they become easier to see (Subramani & Veluchamy, 2020). It follows that contrast resolution is an important aspect of imaging systems. This concept is important in radiology and medical imaging. For medical applications, contrast resolution plays a role in helping distinguish between different tissues and structures. The more the ability to distinguish the different tissues/ structures, the more possible it is to identify a problem/abnormality. The ability to distinguish makes it possible for the interpreter of the medical image clearly see the different structures and tissues. Therefore, contrast resolution works by enabling the creation of distinct features for substances at the same contrast level. One can therefore argue that the more contrast resolution, the better it is for medical applications.
The following are some more facts and examples concerning contrast resolution. Let us start with X-rays. When taking an X-ray image, a beam is sent through the body of the patient/ client. Different parts of the body absorb these rays differently. As a result, it is possible to distinguish between different tissues and organs. With this background, it is now possible to see where contrast resolution comes to play. If the settings of the contrast resolution are adjusted, it is possible to have more clear differences between the organs/ tissues (Subramani & Veluchamy, 2020). The second example revolves around CT scans. CT scans also use X-rays to take an image of body tissues/ organs. However, in this scan, different images are taken at different angles. After taking the images, a computerized system uses the images to create a detailed 3D picture of the organ/ tissue. In the same manner, contrast resolution can help accentuate the image's features.
Another example where contrast resolution can be used is ultrasounds. Ultrasounds use sound waves to create important medical images. Evidence has revealed that sound waves bounce off different tissues/ organs forming varied echoes. The echoes can be used to make an image of the tissues/ organs. As with the other machines described above, the contrast resolution settings of an ultrasound can be adjusted to give more accentuated differences. Researchers have conducted several contrast-resolution experiments (Subramani & Veluchamy, 2020). Most of the experiments revolve around what agents can be used to make the contrast resolution of different imaging machines better.
