Physical Exercise: Intervention to Relieve Cancer-Related Fatigue

Research Paper Instructions:

Write a paper on your proposed problem description for your EBP project. The paper should address the following:
1. Describe the background of the problem. Tell the story of the issue and why it deserves attention. Identify the stakeholders/change agents and who or what organizations are concerned, may benefit from, or are affected by this proposal. List the interested parties, patients, students, agencies, Joint Commission, etc. Make sure that the question fits with your graduate degree specialization.
2. State the purpose or goal and project objectives in specific, realistic, and measurable terms. The objective should address what is to be gained. This is a restatement of the question, providing focus on how to answer the question.
3. Provide supportive rationale that the problem or issue is an important one for nursing to resolve; use relevant professional literature sources.
4. Develop an initial reference list to assure that there is adequate literature to support your evidence-based practice project. The majority of references should be research articles. However, national sources such as Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), Department of Health and Human Resources (HHS), or the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and others may be used when you are gathering statistics to provide the rationale for the problem.
PICOT Question: In cancer patients that have fatigue (P), what is the effect of exercise (I) versus not exercising (C) on their fatigue level and quality of life (O) after six months (T)?

Problem Description
Background of the Problem
Cancer has become more prevalent in recent years. It has presented a challenge to the healthcare system due to its disease and the accompanying cancer-related issues. One of the issues is cancer-related fatigue which affects the quality of life of patients. O'Higgins et al. (2018) revealed this kind of fatigue could not be alleviated through normal interventions such as sleeping or resting. As such, there has been a need for interventions that are specific to this kind of fatigue. Physical exercise has been identified as a therapeutic intervention that can relieve cancer-related fatigue. Research indicates that exercise, as an intervention, is more effective than pharmaceutical interventions (Thong et al., 2020; Mustian et al., 2017). It is imperative to explore exercise as an intervention in more detail.
Stakeholders
The key stakeholders that may benefit from this proposal are nurses and other healthcare workers who care for cancer patients, cancer patients, and cancer survivors. Kessels et al. (2018) reveal that cancer survivors also experience cancer-related fatigue, with a prevalence of 45%. All these stakeholders, in one way or another, experience distress due to cancer-related fatigue.
Relevance of the Proposed Change
Nurses are usually in contact with patients more than other healthcare professionals. The proposed intervention is relevant to nursing advanced practice because it sheds light on how nurses can help cancer patients deal with fatigue. According to Nadler et al. (2017), nurses can recommend and encourage exercise among cancer patients. However, they need to understand the effectiveness of such an intervention. Further, the nursing practice, in general, depends on evidence-based practice, and the proposed change will provide nurses with the evidence they need to support cancer patients.
Purpose Statement
The purpose of this study is to examine whether exercising, as opposed to not exercising, has any effect on the level of fatigue and quality of life among cancer patients after six months of intervention. Various forms of physical exercises, such as aerobic and resistance training (Thong et al., 2020), will be examined compared to physical inactivity.
