risk factors associated with the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in adults in the U. S. currently are associated with health behavior and lifestyle choices.

Community health workers must understand the health profile and common lifestyle and behavioral patterns of specific age groups in order to develop and offer effective primary, secondary and tertiary intervention programs and strategies.

However,getting people to change their behavior can be a "hard sell".

Recently, cases of chronic disease in the USA have been rising steadily, with four in ten adults struggling with one or more chronic diseases. These conditions cause a decline person’s daily activities and require continuous medical attention. Most chronic diseases are associated with lifestyle behaviors within individuals' hands to change. This paper focuses on heart disease and diabetes as the disease of lifestyle in the US, addressing the lifestyle factors among adults associated with these complications and why they are complex to prevent.
Heart disease is a basic term meaning a heart that is not working accordingly. Lifestyle habits such as lack of enough exercise increase individuals' vulnerability. Increased inactivity causes a decline in the body's capacity to manage blood sugar levels and regulate blood pressure (Kandola, 2018). Common inactive trends include lying or sitting and watching television for so long. Physical inactivity causes buildups of fatty materials in the arteries that carry blood to the organs. Whenever these arteries are clogged or blocked, they can lead to a heart attack. Therefore, engaging in exercise is an essential thing each adult can embrace for the wellness of their heart.
Substance abuse, including tobacco smoking and alcoholism, raises the chances of heart problems. The result is that chemicals in cigarette smoke cause plaque buildup in the arteries (National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, 2022). On the other hand, alcohol surges hormones that constrict arteries and tighten, which can alter the force used to pump blood in the body. Moreover, alcohol affects receptors in the blood vessels surrounding the heart that assist in maintaining blood pressure. Hence, smoking and consuming alcohol are common lifestyle behaviors that can contribute to heart disease.
