Introduction
The Orson Welles film Citizen Kane was a revolutionary and outstanding achievement. However, Orson Welles defied standard Hollywood rules regarding film style and story organization, opening a door for research following the 1940s. In addition, Welles's subtle use of lighting and Gregg Toland's deep-focus photography are constantly seen in the movie. These were undoubtedly innovative features, but when watching the film, one is captivated by camera movement, as shown in the motion picture art. The study will examine the film's role in terms of its aesthetic, technological, and socio-political contribution, as well as discuss the key theme of the difficulty of interpreting life.
Orson Welles effectively influences the entire scene's aesthetic composition by using a certain ratio of darkness to light to convey his insights. For example, Kane is seen in the Xanadu scene to be a determined leader. To show how "dark" he is, Mr. Kane is depicted in the setting with darkness on his face. In contrast, Susan, Kane's wife, is frequently cast in shadows to highlight her virtue and her "graceful" role in the movie (Welles, 1941). But in the scenario, White Welles shows Kane in a black suit and his wife in a white suit, which represents darkness and light. In contrast to Susan, who is dressed as the subordinate with a joyous spirit, Kane is portrayed as the headstrong and controlling one while wearing a black suit.
In Citizen Kane, Toland, and Welles effectively blend cinematography by matching camera movements with the dramatic tension of the situations. They challenge a classic Hollywood tradition by extending mobile framing in two directions. For example, Susan performs as a singer in the scene from El Rancho. The cinematography progresses to the rooftop, beginning with a symbol outside the eateries. It then moves through a different sign and gets close to a casement. Welles uses an "indistinguishable" split when it reaches the casement to transition to a long shot from a large angle of El Rancho's interior.
Citizen Kane advanced cinema on many levels, but using a technique known as deep focus was the most significant contribution to cinematography.
