Specific Aim
This study aims to fill current knowledge gaps in the existing literature by comprehensively examining both sides of the issue using the mixed methods research design. The specific aim of the study is to research the benefits and challenges of using personal electronic devices by registered nurses at hospitals. This research will focus on the advantages of using mobile phones to access patient information among nurses together with the disadvantages that come with using personal electronic devices to facilitate patient care.
Research Design
The study will employ a mixed methods research design to investigate the benefits of using personal electronic devices by registered nurses at hospitals. A mixed methods approach is advantageous in that it allows for a comprehensive understanding of the issue by yielding complete evidence. Combining quantitative and qualitative research methods ensures the researcher gains both depth and breadth: quantitative methods involve large samples thereby providing depth and accuracy while qualitative methods involve small samples but provide an in-depth understanding of the research topic (Polit & Beck, 2018). The two primary data collection tools will be survey (quantitative) and interviews (qualitative) where the former will precede the latter. Qualitative research design is flexible and the investigator can adjust what is learned during data collection to acquire a keener understanding of the whole: the survey findings will help inform subsequent interview strategies (Chambliss & Schutt, 2019).
Sampling
The study will employ different sampling techniques for the two data collection approaches: simple random sampling will be used in selecting survey respondents while purposive sampling will be used for determining the interviewees. Large and homogenous populations are critical to ensuring sample representativeness and therefore the investigator will seek approval from the American Nurses Association (ANA) Research Coordinator to use their membership list in identifying study participants. Random digit dialing will then be applied to identify the phone prefixes corresponding to the area in which the survey will be conducted. A sample of 500 nurses will be selected from the ANA membership list to participate in the survey. Purposive sampling will be used to select a sample of fifteen nurses from the same pool. The focus will be on nurse leaders who are likely to possess extensive knowledge about the use of personal electronic devices by registered nurses at hospitals. Since the focus of the interviews will be gathering in-depth data on the perceptions, attitudes, and experiences of nurses using personal electronic devices, it is critical that the interviewees be informative subjects who can provide an overall sense of the issue.
Data Collection
