Mission, Vision, and Value Analysis

The organization chosen for this mission, vision, and value analysis is the Children's Hospital & Medical Center (Children's) from Omaha, Nebraska. As a full-service pediatric health care centre, Children's serves patients throughout its home state, northwestern Missouri, northern Kansas, South Dakota, and western Iowa. It provides more than 50 outpatient speciality services to children across its five-state region.
Children's was first established on March 14, 1948, as Children's Memorial Hospital, by Omaha World-Herald publisher Mr Henry Doorly, and dean of the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Dr C.W.M. Poynter. As of 2018, the hospital has had a total of 676,900 patient visits, 149,700 patients, 51,144 Medicaid patients, more than 50 outpatient speciality services, 12 regional clinics in 3 different states and a 145-bed capacity.
Throughout the years of its operation, Children's has garnered numerous awards for its outstanding performance in the healthcare industry, and the quality of the services it has provided; awards such as the U.S. News & World Report "Best Children's Hospital" in multiple fields of healthcare, and the Gold Beacon Award granted by the AACN.
Mission and Vision
In its early chapters, Children's has firmly advocated for the vision that "no child in need of medical care would be turned away due to an inability to pay." Towards 2017, the hospital adopted a new vision which is "to be a global leader in children's health," marking a more globalized approach in their healthcare services.
Children's states that their mission is to "improve the life of every child, through dedication to exceptional care, research, education, and advocacy." Former president of Children's, Dr Richard Azizkhan, M.D., stated that it no longer is just about survival, but about quality of life and the potential that children can be able to reach. Thus it may be said that the healthcare infrastructure put in place and observed in Children's does not only meet the minimum requirements of providing medical services but exceeds such threshold and ventures into advocacy and research to improve better not only the health but the overall quality of life of its patients.
These contemporaneous developments may be noted to be aimed towards two directions: globalization, and a multifaceted approach to healthcare. As Dr. Azizkhan puts it, Children's aims to build a stronger enterprise consisting of exceptional medical research, clinical care, and educational programs which will serve as a model adaptable in other areas of the world; truly, a "global leader," as stated in its vision.
Effectiveness
A mission statement, as compared to a vision statement, is more immediate and pragmatic, while a vision statement provides for a more general and overarching objective to which the organization is aiming. A mission statement is an effective organizational tool if it possesses specific characteristics, such as (1) Brevity, the quality of not being too lengthy or verbose; (2) Memorability, the ease of the mission and vision to come to mind; (3) Flexibility, to not necessarily paralyze or constrain the managers or leaders of the organization i...
