Doctoral learners must be acquainted with these designs to make an accurate selection for their dissertation research studies. In this assignment, you will explore a potential research design for your dissertation. Engaging in this exploration neither finalizes nor approves your research design; final selection and approval of the research design will be done at a later date in conjunction with your dissertation committee.

The advancement in technology has greatly impacted the way healthcare services are delivered to patients and also significantly improved the interaction between the patients and healthcare providers. As earlier discussed, to effectively measure the impact of telehealth in a given healthcare system, a quantitative method would be the most appropriate in exploring or studying the relationship between telehealth and healthcare service provision in terms of its impact on both the patients and service providers.
There are five quantitative research designs approved by Grand Canyon University; quasi-experimental, experimental, correlational, descriptive, and causal-comparative. Of the five designs, the causal-comparative is the most appropriate in studying the impact of telehealth in a given healthcare system. It is the most appropriate because it helps in the study of a causal relationship, which exists between an independent variable and a dependent variable (Lee, 2008). It is the most appropriate in understanding the effectiveness of a telehealth system by comparing data from when the system was implemented against when it had not been implemented. Data from the two periods can provide a clear indication as to whether there was any impact or not.
Causal-comparative research exists in three major forms, which are good for the analysis of medical technology and its use in the research process. It can be used in the exploration of effects, exploration of causes, and exploration of consequences. Also, it exists in two forms; the retrospective causal-comparative design, which can help explain the impact of telehealth on society while comparing it to the period when the technology had not been developed. The prospective causal-comparative design help in the process of studying the various causes and investigating the possible effects of telehealth on the medical field while (Lee, 2008).
The rationale for the causal-comparative design
Many researchers who have explored telehealth systems have often used the comparative approach in understanding the impact it has in as far as efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare service provision is concerned. Michael Jong and Majed Kraishi (2004) conducted a comparative study on the utility of telehealth in the provision of rheumatology services to rural and northern communities in Canada. The study compared the satisfaction of patients who visited specialty clinics for rheumatology services against those who were given email consults and video conferencing with the physicians. A questionnaire was administered to the physicians to compare their level of satisfaction between the two methods. The physicians responded positively to both methods, but those who used telehealth were the most positive indicating they were confident with the method as it had immediate feedback between the patient and physician, effective case management, and also an easier transfer of knowledge to the patient.
