Research Paper Instructions:

Educators continuously explore approaches to instruction that support adolescents’ physical, cognitive, or socioemotional growth. This awareness guides lesson preparation by understanding the unique challenges adolescents face related to classroom learning.
This two-part assignment will provide students with an introduction to basic facts about the brain including brain function, anatomy, imaging, and stages of cognitive development.
Part 1: 5 Brain Facts
Based on the readings in Topic 2, create an annotated list of 5 Things Every Educator Should Know about the Adolescent Brain." Include 5 statements - brain facts that assess developmental characteristics of adolescent behaviors. Follow each statement with a 50-100 word paragraph describing how each fact affects learning or brain development that promotes growth for students with physical, cognitive, or socioemotional needs. Provide at least one scholarly resource for each statement.
Example: Fact: The amygdala is the brain’s emotional control center.
The amygdala regulates the brain’s response to emotions such as fear, excitement, and pleasure. As part of the brain’s limbic system, it is located next to the hippocampus – the part of the brain that plays a significant role in converting information from working memory to long-term memory. Exposure to long-term stress has been found to cause damage to the amygdala which may account for why some students, particularly those from poverty, struggle to regulate their emotions and behavior (Lau, et al., 2016).
Part 2: Reflection
Select two of the facts from your Top 5 list, and in 250-500 words, reflect on and describe ways in which the brain affects learning, constructs knowledge, acquires skills, and develops thinking processes. Be sure to describe opportunities to improve instructional practice and facilitate student learning with the use of technology.

1 Brain go through a tremendous growth spurt during adolescence
The brain undergoes significant remodeling during teenagehood before it develops to full adult function ability. At this stage, the grey matter grows whereby the thought and processes that were not utilized in childhood are pruned away (Casey et al., 2008). At this time, more connections are strengthened to make it more efficient. The pruning initially occurs at the back of the brain and later progresses to the front part, which continues into early adulthood.
2 Adolescents mostly rely on the amygdala
Amygdala is located at the base of the brain and plays a significant role in processing emotions. Notably, this part of the brain develops at an early age. During adolescence, the frontal cortex, which is the brain segment that controls reasoning, is not fully developed (Stolyarova & Izquierdo, 2015). As a result, they rely mostly on the amygdala when making decisions. Therefore, teenagers experience intense rage, fear, aggression, and even excitement. Teenagers, therefore, use the part of the brains that are developed and minimally rely on those that are under construction.
3 Brain in adolescence is hardwired for risk-taking.
Teens rely on their emotions, and thus they quickly respond to incentives and other socioemotional contexts (Britt, 2020). At this stage, they lack emotional control that leads them to self-destructive risk-taking like bullying, substance abuse, unsafe sexual behavior, among others.
4 The brain is ready to learn and adapt

The teen brain is characterized by plasticity, whereby it can change and adapt to its environment. As it continues to grow, it can absorb different activities like art, exercise, and academics ("NIMH, The Teen Brain, "2020).
5 Environment affects Adolescent brain development.
According to Teen Brain Development (2020), events and circumstances in teenagers' life effects have a significant impact on their brains. The development of the brain depends on how exposed a teenager is and what occurs in their immediate environment.
