The study used the 2×2 between subjects experiment methodology.
The experiment was applied on ninety-six second year M.B.A. students enrolled in financial statement analysis courses.
They were divided into two groups the first deals with the information by using the XBRL- enhanced search engine, and the second deals with the same information in a PDF-formatted document.

The two groups were asked to allocate an investment of $10,000 between two firms (A, B).

When stock option accounting varies between firms, the use of XBRL enhanced search engine  increases the  chance of  acquiring information about stock option compensation .
