Chemical potential hazards

Conversion Biology Research Study.
As Rachel Carson brought to everyone’s attention in her book Silent Spring, many people (I’m guessing maybe even you) don’t realize what chemicals they are exposing themselves to on a daily basis. Chemical manufacturers can still make and sell potentially deadly chemicals to consumers as long as they include proper instructions and a warning about potential hazards on the product label.

2. Which products were you surprised had a warning label? Why?
I was particularly surprised with the product “Dove Men+Care Minerals + Sage Bar-05/30/2017” used as personal care with a warning that it should be stored away from children’s reach. While this product does not have any warnings of chemical hazard, the label indicate that it should be kept away from children. Toxicity information is not given and this makes it difficult for consumers to know the cause of labeling as “keep out of reach of children.”
3. What is the HMIS rating scale?
Hazardous Materials Identification System (HMIS) scale refers to a voluntary hazard-rating system that was developed by the American Coatings Association (ACA) to assist employers in complying with the labeling requirements in the workplaces of the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) revised Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). The HMIS communicates information regarding in-plant chemical hazard with numbers, colors, and alphabetical letters as shown in the example in Figure 1 below.
Figure 1. HMIS information about chemical hazards (ChemSafetyPro, 2018)
4. What are the 3 categories for the HMIS ?
The labeling system of HMIS uses three color coded bards to relate three types of hazards, including healthy (blue), flammability (red), and reactivity (yellow) with ratings from 0 to 4, with 0 being the least hazardous material while 4 being the...
