C. Elegans or Caenorhabditis elegans is a small and free-living nematode worm. Historically, the C. Elegans was first described in 1900 by Émile Maupas, Sydney Brenner had made integral advancements to the field of molecular biology by the early 1960s. From the subsequent scientific advancements, there was the use if the C. Elegans worm to carry out research. The worm has been used in genetic investigations as a standard model organism. The C. Elegans is useful in neurobiology, cell biology and the study of developmental biology. C. Elegans are non-parasitic, do not cause any infections and are not dangerous. They are small in size and grow about 1 mm lengthwise. Their habitat is in the soil specifically in decomposing vegetation around the world. The nematode worm’s mode of survival is through feeding on microbes such as bacteria and serves no economic importance to man. Several supportive characteristics make the C. Elegans worm suitable scientific research. One of the main reasons as to why the worm is used is because it can be found easily be found cheaply in a plate of bacteria. The other reason as to why the worm is suitable for research is it can be stored by freezing and being unfrozen when the need is there (Kuroyanagi, Takei, & Suzuki, 2014). In addition to the C. Elegans worm being easily preserved, the eggs and reproduction also take two weeks, which is pivotal in a scientific study as the growth and development of the worm enhances research. The last reason as to why the worm is used is that it is easy to study the worm under a microscope. Easy examination of the worm enhances research through the worm.
