The Lottery by Shirley Jackson
Coming across a story that relates to one’s identity and history is quite a blessing. In this case, the "Lottery," a story by Jackson, one comes to terms to what takes place in rural America. I noticed that it was morning due to the depiction of the weather patterns as being warm, bright, and pleasant. Besides, this could be deduced since most of the townspeople participating in the annual lottery usually convene at about ten o’clock in the village square.
I believe that the Folks of the village exude mixed feelings about the lottery. Primarily, I noticed the zealous way in which they run the lottery since they firmly believe in it. They also criticize those who want to do away with the lottery besides the lottery boosted their agriculture. For example, while reading, I came across old man Warner who has been around a long time and has seen many lotteries says there is no reason to discontinue the lottery. Besides, on the contrary side of the coin, other villagers do not like the lottery, and they believe that it has no meaningful purpose and should change. For example, Tessie does not like the lottery, and she protests when chosen. Such a stance is quite common in the modern world where people hold varied views regarding a given phenomenon.
It is quite evident that the lottery has gone on for a long time because, as I read through the story, I realize that the precise origins of the ritual have slowly disappeared in the mists of time. Although the lottery's original paraphernalia was long gone, the black box that contained the tickets was used even before the birth of Old Man Warner, and he's the oldest man in town.
