The Author
The essay was written by a sociologist known as Ali Shariati. He had trained at the Sorbonne and the University of Mashhad in Iran. Ali wrote the discourse intending to draw people away from the superficial interpretation that has always been attached to the story of Cain and Abel. According to him, commentators on the Qur'an and other religious leaders have always held that the story's purpose is to condemn murder. Ali considers this a shallow perspective and endeavors to expound on it further. He considers the murder as the most important event to ever happen to mankind. He also shows, in his discourse, that the murder symbolizes the defeat of primitive communism by capitalism. In essence, it marked the end of equality, brotherhood, and morality. To be precise, the author seeks to discount the widely held maxim that the story is entirely ethical. He contends that the two protagonists in the story are not just mere brothers. They are a representation of two classes of humankind. Abel represents the oppressed, those people who, throughout the ages, have been trampled underfoot. On the other hand, Cain symbolizes the system of private ownership that has held the world in its stranglehold. He stands for a people who use others as ladders to achieve staggering wealth and success.
