In the article " Those White Guys Are Working for Me": Dizzy Gillespie, Jazz, and the Cultural Politics of the Cold War during the Eisenhower Administration (2007),David M. Carletta’s argues that the administration resulted to using jazz diplomacy during the Cold War in order to maintain America’s cultural influence in the face of criticism and propaganda by the Soviet Union. By highlighting the efforts towards anticommunism propaganda and sponsorship of cultural programs, Carletta manages to link U.S diplomacy with popular culture. Jazz musicians were no expected to question the U.S. government civil rights policies, and despite jazz becoming more popular outside the U.S, government support for the genre was weak in the domestic market.
Carletta‘s purpose is to demonstrate Eisenhower’s support for jazz music for cultural diplomacy purposes in order to demonstrate the successes and challenges of this strategy towards highlighting the cultural and material benefits of the capitalist system unlike communism.
