Understanding Huntington's Disease

As people age, they are more prone to certain types of illnesses. The populations at risk usually take appropriate measures to safeguard themselves from the diseases. Huntington's disease is one of the illnesses that affect people from the 30s and 40s and worsens with time, becoming fatal for a period of up to 20 years. Oosterloo et al. (2019) conducted about the condition. The researchers define the condition as an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disease characterized by poor movements, psychiatric disorders, and cognitive deterioration. The authors explain that the condition results from an expanded CAG trinucleotide repeat in the Huntington (HTT) gene on chromosome 4. The above results show that many people might be at the common-onset stage, which is more difficult to detect because of the milder symptoms that the patients present. The most common diagnostic method that most people rely on to know that they are suffering from the condition is gait and balance problems.
While early diagnosis is recommended, the process is quite complex because, in certain instances, the disease may not originate from its expected source. The immediate suspect of the source of the condition for the patients is their family history. However, in some instances, this history turns out to be negative, making the diagnosis process more complex. Therefore, the most effective approach is to monitor the slightest symptoms, especially in balance and gait. Individuals who realize that they tend to lose their balance or exhibit gait problems should seek medical help immediately.
