Introduction
In recent days the refugee crisis has increasingly become a modern-day societal problem. There are many contributory reasons for the problem namely people fleeing violence and outbreak of war, persecution and regimes, global inequalities. Recent examples include Somalia refugees fleeing civil strife that has lasted for more than three decades since the ousting of dictator Said Barre, Kosovan refugees who were forced from their homes when by conflict erupted with Balkans; Afghan, Iran, Iran and Syrian refugees fleeing oppressive regimes etcetera. This has become a global phenomenon particularly occurring in third world countries, further straining already poor population.
On this paper I review the article Trapped in Statelessness: Rohingya Refugees in Bangladesh by Milton AH, et al. (2017, Int J Environ Res Public Health), which accounts the humanitarian refugees crises in Bangladesh. I believe this article would be interesting to give the society an opportunity at a glance, understand this unimaginable human rights violations and what the international communities and aid groups are doing to avert the crisis.
Special Representative from the officer of Secretary-General for particular Violence in conflict has described the most horrifying accounts of sexual outrage against people of the female gender in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. Myanmar is using this as a push factor to do mass displacement. Recent studies have shown a huge influx of refugees some of them unaccompanied children. United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reported a huge increase in forcibly dispersed people in the world including Rohingya people (Lawn, 2016). Rohingya a minority group, have fled to Bangladesh escaping brutal attacks in their villages in Myanmar by government militias. Nearly 700,000 have fled across Naf River into southeastern Bangladesh joining roughly a quarter a million who had fled earlier.
I have a feeling from the article that there is serious danger of genocide to annihilate the Rohingya population. Rohingya are Muslims ethnic and religious minority in Myanmar previously known Burma. They have been denied recognition as de facto citizens of Myanmar even though they have lived there for generations, referring them as “Bengali”- suggesting there are from Bangladesh, even though they do not speak the same language. They have experienced discriminations and serious atrocities. For example, in 2017 in what the U.N. and human rights groups denounced as a campaign of ethnic cleansing after Myanmar government soldiers and pro- government militias burned the entire village, where thousands of Rohingya were killed.
Myanmar government has continued to kill Rohingya people in the guise that there are flushing out the terrorist. It has also refused to allow the International journalist and U.N investigators to investigate the massacre, even jailing their own reporters who were investigating the killing of Rohingya Muslims for Reuters.
