Black Power in Jamaica
Jamaica is mostly comprised of a black population compared to other races. It also gained independence in 1962, establishing a government ruled by the majority of its citizens of black ethnicity. However, is there a need for black power in Jamaica? Or has the country already attained black power? Black power relates to the act of developing pride in being black, being able to manage and maintain economic resources, and also having a political government that is run by the black community. The movement of black power started at the time of Jamaica's independence until the end of the 1980s. During this period, there was a campaign for racial identity among Jamaican citizens who felt they should be the ones holding important careers in the economy. Yet, very few blacks were employed or sought after by the market during this era. Very few black Jamaicans could confidently claim to have the economic power to run the economy. The country was divided along economic lines, and it was evident that very few black Jamaicans were rich. The rich population mainly comprised whites, a few mulattos, and a few blacks.
On the other hand, blacks were the majority of the poor population. One could argue that Jamaica had obtained black power by allowing black Jamaicans to be elected to top positions in government. Despite this, most black Jamaicans were still poor, and the movement only helped the political part of the society while neglecting the economic side.
Although the majority of the black Jamaicans were poor economically, there were few black Jamaicans who were privileged to be in the middle-income economy. While most Jamaicans trace their roots to an African origin, there is evidence that shows that most middle-income and privileged Jamaicans were not confident about their skin color. They would rarely associate with other black members and act in ways that would discriminate against black empowerment. Was there a difference in how black Jamaicans viewed black power and black identity on different economic levels?
